The Medical History Society of New Jersey is pleased to announce its first online event. On Wednesday, August 26, at 7:00 pm, John Zen Jackson will discuss “Walt Whitman’s Healing Presence: A Poet’s Civil War.”

During the Civil War, the great American poet and future Camden resident Walt Whitman volunteered at hospitals in Washington, D.C., tending to wounded soldiers. His experiences as a caregiver during the national crisis inspired numerous poems with medical themes.

Drawing on his article published in the Winter 2020 issue of MDAdvisor, John Zen Jackson will discuss Whitman’s Civil War experiences and their influence on his poetry.
